Support Our Vision
CARSS projects don’t “look” like your typical, grant-supported university research project. In fact, they tend to go beyond academic business as usual: They take on problems that look too big, advocate risk-taking in intellectual scope, acknowledge the need to develop innovative complex solutions, and often work outside the comfort zone of any academic discipline. It’s not always the kind of picture that immediately wins conventional grants or federal agency support.
Without an incubator like CARSS, these ideas might not go anywhere. With CARSS’s help they can grow into major-cross disciplinary efforts that ultimately can attract funding on their own. But first they need “venture capital” to prove themselves.
The University has provided a small core of start-up monies. But to develop and be sustained as an incubator of ultimately grant-supported novel work, CARSS will require additional venture capital, most likely from private donors and visionary sources to fulfill CARSS promise and its R&D function.
Here are some of the center’s core needs:
- Endowments of project development staff
- Expendable gifts
- Start-up funds for especially high-risk potentially high impact projects
